ACTIVE SENIOR CITIZENS: VOLUNTEERS
FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION

AN EXCHANGE OF SENIOR VOLUNTEERS AMONG ASSOCIAZIONE UNIAMOCI ONLUS (ITALY) AND FUNDAŢIA CREŞTINĂ DIAKONIA SFÂNTU GHEORGHE (ROMANIA), BOTH ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE PROMOTION OF SOCIAL INCLUSION OF YOUNG ADULT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
ASC is a Grundtvig Senior Volunteering Project realized under the Lifelong Learning Programme, founded by the European Commission. The project started in 01 August 2013 and will last until 31 July 2015.
It is realized thanks to the cooperation of two European organizations actively involved in the promotion of social inclusion of young adult people with disabilities: ASSOCIAZIONE UNIAMOCI ONLUS from ITALY and FUNDAŢIA CREŞTINĂ DIAKONIA SFÂNTU GHEORGHE from ROMANIA.
ACTIVITIES:
ASC consists in an exchange of senior volunteers (people over 50 yers old) among the two organizations: 6 people from Uniamoci Onlus will be volunteers in FUNDAŢIA CREŞTINĂ DIAKONIA SFÂNTU GHEORGHE (ROMANIA) for 3 weeks and 6 people from Fundaţia Creştină Diakonia will be volunteers in ASSOCIAZIONE UNIAMOCI ONLUS (ITALY) for 3 weeks as well. The mobilities will be equally distributed over the two year duration of the project.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SENIOR VOLUNTEER ABROAD?
The hosted volunteers they will be actively involved in the daily work of the two organizations, supporting their staff in the development of the activities addressed to the young/adult people with disability. They will have the opportunity to learn the specific approach to disability of the hosting organization and learn practical skills about the management of a group of disabled learners, the implementation of recreational activities, they will learn how to interact with people with disability in an inclusive way. They will have the opportunity to organize and implement, with the support of the staff of the hosting organization, some workshops and activities related to their home language/english teaching, manufacture, cooking or anything else related to their own abilities. They will be capable to analyse the social welfare policy and the lifestyle of a person with disability in another Country, making comparisons and developing new ideas for social inclusion in a European dimension.
The main focus of the project is the intergenerational relation between the senior volunteers and the disabled people and their active involvement in the support and assistance to the users.
According to the Action Plan on adult learning suggestion about the need to “focus on those who are disadvantaged”, some of the participants will belong to disadvantaged groups (migrants, elder people or persons with disability).
RESULTS
This process will allow a virtuous cycle of non formal learning for the senior volunteers and the participating organizations, through the sharing of experience, knowledge and methods, and will represent an added value for the people with disability as indirect beneficiaries
The local work of the involved organizations will gain a European dimension thanks to the cultural and experiential contribution of volunteers from another European Country
The two organizations will share their expertise through the direct experience and work of volunteers
The senior volunteers’ personal, social, practical and intercultural skills will increase, making them aware of their role as European active citizens.
